Larkspur Lair

Seriously, it’s a jungle out there!

019018

I am 5’4 1/2” tall, (gotta get that 1/2” in there) every little bit helps.  Can you believe that this Larkspur is taller than me?

Last year I brought a few starts of Larkspur up from our Highland home.

When they had finished blooming I pulled them out and saved the seeds.

Last Fall I sprinkled seeds up on the hill behind an area that is our future fire pit.

This Larkspur is out of control.

003

This picture shows you where it is in perspective with our pondless waterfall.

007

When I was snapping pics I thought that it looked neat seeing it through this ornamental grass.

009

This is where our fire pit will be.

006

Now that’s a whole lot of Larkspur!

005

If I didn’t know better, I’d think that this metal bee has been doing an excellent job of pollinating.

004

These pics were taken from on top of the hill.

010

011

This Larkspur is where I originally planted it last year.

012

From there, some reseeded in the herb garden across the way.  Originally I thought I would pull it out.  Being the Larkspur lover that I am, I didn’t have the heart. Besides, it just makes the garden more cottagey.

013

Most of it is dark purple and white. With a few pale blue and lavender.

015014

There are only 4 spikes of pink in the whole lot.

Are you finding yourself saying, “What was she thinking?”

Let me share with you my thought process.

1.  I love Larkspur!  After all, it is my birthday flower.

2.  It attracts butterflies, and I love butterflies. See my picture on my sidebar.  I took that last year.

3.  It blooms and then it’s outta here.  I just pull it up.  Good for any bare spots.  There are actually some trees, bushes, and perennials up there.  You'd never know it because they are buried in the load of Larkspur.

4.  I think that it is much prettier in bunches.

5.  I love Larkspur!  Did I already say that?

It may be a jungle out there, but I’m lovin every inch of it!

I’m going to link my loads of Larkspur with:

You are so cute in the jungle of Larkspur. It is one of my favorite flowers too, maybe because usually it is purple. I love purple! I am glad you found your way back to your house so you could blog about this most beautiful garden of Larkspur.

Love your Larkspur hedge! It's much prettier than boring old privet or laurel which is what I have here.
Keep reseeding, it's glorious.

We planted larkspur last year for the first time and this year it self-sowed so easily that we are thinking of pulling some like weeding. But you have inspire me to transplant those self-sowed seedling and created a larkspur patch. It look so fun surrounded by larkspur in your photo. I am glad that I visit your blog today. Enjoyed my visit very much.

My son a landscaper says I am a 60's gardener..I'm like you, places seeds here and there. I have one plant (don't even know the name, got it from a yard sale) that is growing crazy in my garden. I've thrown those seeds here and there and have TONS coming up..LOL. I adore the pic of you behind the larkspur. It is too cute.

Out of this world Larkspur! It's absolutely gorgeous and your "ode to larkspur" is charming. Maybe some of us should have a seed exchange. I'm sowing foxglove again this year (it takes about three years from seed to a flowering plant, I'm learning) and I have lots of seeds from my peonies, though I've never tried to harvest and collect them. Plus I have daylilies like you have larkspur!

Send me a packet of those seeds please, I need them to cover my almost 3 acres!

WoW! that was wonderful. I have never planted Larkspur and now I want to! Some of my best flower beds have been from seed tossing, the driveway has bloomed a few times as well Ha! Nice pictures and interesting post, thanks ~ Jacque

omg! That is a terrific idea! The larkspur is a stunning addition to so many areas in the garden! The complementary colors are very striking. And you make it sound so easy! (I'm sure it wasn't!)
One suggestion: The volcanic boulders are great space definers. Maybe a hot tub could go in one of those sections?
Your garden is beautiful, Jann! Happy Birthday!

I think it is beautiful. Your whole garden area is gorgeous. I don't think I have ever seen Larkspur in real life. Really don't think I had ever heard of it until the last year or so.

Nice to visit with you.

The larkspur is gorgeous! I seeded a bed and all my larkpur seed shifted to the front of the bed instead of the back where I had wanted it but like you I didn't have the heart to pull it out till it was through blooming. And yes I had beautiful butterflies around it too!

Thanks for visiting my blog. I enjoyed the tour of your larkspur garden. They are lovely. I don't think I've seen them grown around here in MD. I think our temps are too humid and hot.

Your post drew me in because of a very personal story about larkspur and my grandma that passed away several years ago. Larkspur has always been a favorite of hers and mine and I grow it every year. On this particular day, Grandma was in the hospital not doing well and I went by the hospital to visit her before going on to work and brought her a little boquet of larkspur. I asked her if she knew what kind of flower it was and she answered, "well of course I know what they are, they are larkspur" and she was so excited.
Those were the last words she spoke to me. I will always cherish those words and larkspur. Thank you for the reminder.

I have no experience with Larkspur but it looks amazing...but I have a small garden and can't afford to have it swallowed up by one plant even if it is pretty!!
